BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A man was critically injured Thursday morning when his car crashed into a CSX train in the area of 1700 Palmetto Park Road. Traffic was stopped in the area for part of the morning as investigators took over the scene.
The Boca Raton Police Department confirmed the incident around 2:30 with a two sentence statement: “Just after 10am, we responded to a southbound CSX train vs vehicle accident at 1700 W Palmetto Park Road. One person was transported to a local hospital.” But sources connected to the rescue operation tell BocaNewsNow.com that a man in his 30s sustained severe injuries in the crash and lost a “significant” amount of blood. He was rushed to Delray Medical Center. Delray Medical Center is the region’s trauma center.
It’s unclear exactly what happened. The Boca Raton Police Department did not provide a preliminary narrative — information commonly provided by other departments in the region. We do not know whether the incident was an accident or an attempt by the driver of the vehicle to commit suicide by train. We do not know if the injured person was the driver or a passenger.
Suicide by train is an increasingly common occurrence in South Florida. This week is actually a train safety awareness week where local law enforcement agencies are attempting to remind drivers of the dangers of crossing tracks, while encouraging those who are considering suicide to seek help. It is not believed anyone on the train was injured.
ED NOTE: A previous version of this story suggested the crash involved a Tri-Rail train. It involved a CSX train on tracks used by Tri-Rail.
