UPDATE: HOMELESS OR MENTALLY ILL PERSON ALLEGEDLY ATTACKED POLICE OFFICER.

A person identified as “homeless” and/or “mentally ill” allegedly lunged at a Boca Raton Police Officer Wednesday morning. The officer responded by shooting and killing the suspect. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating.

UPDATE: 4:43 p.m. — The shooting scene is now cleared and the intersection near City Hall and the Boca Raton Police Department is again open to traffic. (100 NW 2nd Avenue).

UPDATE: 4:07 p.m. — Sources tell BocaNewsNow.com that the victim of today’s police-involved shooting was unarmed. It is unclear as the investigation continues what led the officer to use lethal force as opposed to a taser. Boca Raton Police do utilize body cameras.

UPDATE: 2:47 p.m. — The police officer who shot and killed a suspect earlier today is said to be shaken but medically fine. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement continues to investigate.

UPDATE: 2:40 p.m. — Sources tell BocaNewsNow.com that the shooting victim is a person who is homeless and/or suffering a mental illness. The person allegedly lunged at the police officer. Police apparently received multiple calls from multiple people about a person — or people — harassing motorists as they drove near the Boca Raton City Hall complex. When an officer responded, one of the people alleged to be harassing motorists went after the police officer. That officer tried to diffuse the situation but ultimately had to shoot the suspect. The victim died.

UPDATE: 1:41 p.m. — Still no written statement from Boca PD concerning details of today’s officer-involved shooting.

UPDATE: 12:50 p.m. — The area of 2nd Avenue and 2nd Street remain closed as the investigation into today’s police-involved shooting in Boca Raton continues.

UPDATE: 12:45 p.m. — Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating the police-involved shooting in Boca Raton.

BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A Boca Raton Police Officer was involved in a shooting near the police station just before 11:30 this morning. While details are few as of 12:20 p.m., we have learned the area of 100 NW 2nd Avenue is closed and police are on the scene. The victim is dead.
