Morey Clemmons Had History Of Arrests In Palm Beach County. Homeless, Apparently With Mental Health Issues.
BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The man shot and killed by a Boca Raton Police Officer on Wednesday had a history of arrests in Palm Beach County. Most cases against him, however, were dismissed. Morey Clemmons, 39, is identified as the victim.
Clemmons, according to sources familiar with the shooting but not authorized to share details, was well known to the Boca Raton Police Department as being homeless and suffering from mental health issues. On Wednesday, police were dispatched to the area of the police department on NW 2nd Avenue for reports of Clemmons harassing motorists and pedestrians around 11 a.m. When an officer arrived and attempted to calm Clemmons down, Clemmons allegedly lunged at the officer. The officer responded with a taser which apparently did little to stop Clemmons. The officer then pulled a gun and fired — killing Clemmons on the scene. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating the shooting — per state policy.
Clemmons was arrested by the Boca Raton Police Department in March and charged with Larceny. He was given “time served” and sent on his way. He was previously arrested by police in West Palm Beach for robbery without a firearm and battery. Prosecutors did not file charges in those cases. He was arrested by the same police department back in November of 2023 for Kidnap/False Imprisonment. Again, prosecutors did not pursue charges.
In July of 2023, West Palm Beach Police arrested Clemmons on a charge of larceny. A judge sentenced him to “time served.” In April of 2021, Clemmons was arrested by PBSO for Battery. He was released shortly after he was booked.
There is no indication through court filings that Palm Beach County was providing mental health or other assistance to Morey Clemmons, although he was on “probation” at the time of his killing, which suggests a probation officer should have been monitoring his situation and condition.
