Broward-Based Airline Updates Terms As It Nears Bankruptcy Exit…

Spirit Airlines, emergening from bankruptcy, is banning gross travelers.

BROWARD COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Broward County-based Spirit Airlines has a new message to travelers: it may be an ultra-discount airline, but you can’t fly if you look like trash. That’s from the updated “conduct and condition” clause of its terms of carriage. Anyone spending time in an airport that Spirit serves knows that few would confuse some of its customers with the “Upper Class” section of a Virgin Atlantic flight.

The terms, updated this week, state the following: “A guest shall not be permitted to board the aircraft or may be required to leave an aircraft if that guest: is disorderly, abusive, violent, or their conduct creates an unreasonable risk of offense or annoyance to other guests; appears to be intoxicated or under the influence of drugs; interferes or attempts to interfere with any member of the flight crew in the pursuit of his/her duties, or fails to obey lawful instructions of flight crew members; is or is perceived by the flight crew to pose a security threat or risk of harm or damage to the airline, its aircraft or property, and/or other guests, or their property; has a contagious disease that is transmissible during the normal course of a flight, e.g., chicken pox; is unable or unwilling to sit in a seat with a seat belt fastened during the normal course of a flight; is barefoot or inadequately clothed (i.e., see-through clothing; not adequately covered; exposed breasts, buttocks, or other private parts), or whose clothing or article, including body art, is lewd, obscene, oroffensive in nature; oror whose clothing or article, including body art, is lewd, obscene, or has an offensive odor unless caused by a qualified disability.”

It’s the last section — the “inadequately clothed” section which includes body art — that’s getting attention on travel blogs and and forums. Airlines always have the right to refuse boarding or kick passengers off a plane for any reason. But few have speificied the actual clothing or body art that is or is not permitted.

Spirit Airlines is trying to reestablish itself as a legitimate option for business travelers with an increased focus on its “Go Big” seats (first class-sized seats without first class service), fast WiFi, and more. Nothing pushes business travelers away faster — other than delayed flights — than smelly, gross passengers wearing inappropriate clothing and displaying offensive body art. We note that American Airlines, which just posted excellent financials, is also focused on a more palatable travel experience. While certainly not a major reason for financial success, the airline is strictly enforcing its “quiet cabin” rule which requires passengers to use headphones/earbuds if listening to content on a phone or other device.
