That Sunday Night I-95 Shutdown Started As A Dispute In North Broward County.

BROWARD COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The I-95 shutdown that stranded drivers for hours Sunday night between North Broward and Fort Lauderdale all started as a dispute in Pompano Beach. The Broward Sheriff’s Office, which continues its investigation, issued this statement to BocaNewsNow.com. We note that I-95 was closed for hours in the southbound direction. It reopened early Monday morning.

According to detectives, shortly after 6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26, Broward County Regional Communications received reports of a shooting on Interstate 95 southbound, north of Oakland Park Boulevard. Broward Sheriff’s Office Oakland Park District deputies, Florida Highway Patrol troopers, Oakland Park Fire Rescue and the Fort Lauderdale Police Department responded and located an adult male who had been shot. The man was transported by paramedics to Broward Health Medical Center and was pronounced deceased.
At the request of FHP, detectives with BSO’s Homicide Unit responded to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. According to detectives, preliminary investigation revealed that a physical dispute occurred at a Pompano Beach residence between Xavier Williams and an adult female prior to the shooting on I-95. The adult female left with another adult male. At some point on I-95, the adult male discharged his weapon, striking Williams.
The adult male remained on scene, cooperated with detectives and was interviewed, where a claim of self-defense was presented. At the conclusion of the investigation, the case will be presented to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office to determine if criminal charges will be filed. The investigation is ongoing.<<<
