Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Homicide Unit, in collaboration with investigators from BSO’s K-9, Aviation, and T.I.T.A.N. (Threat Intervention Tactics Analytics Network) units, have arrested 19-year-old Kenneth Philpart Jr. following the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Jonathan Isaiah Johnson, on unrelated charges. The arrest occurred the evening of Saturday, March 1, shortly after Philpart Jr. shot Johnson near the 600 block of Southwest 14th Street in Deerfield Beach.
According to investigators, at approximately 7:18 p.m. that day, Broward County Regional Communications received reports of a man armed with a gun near the 900 block of Southwest 14th Street. BSO Deerfield Beach deputies responded to investigate. While on scene, deputies heard a single gunshot and located Johnson a few blocks away, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded and transported Johnson to Broward Health North, where he was pronounced deceased.
While deputies were setting up a perimeter, BSO Aviation spotted Philpart Jr. in his underwear holding a gun near the 1300 block of Southwest Sixth Terrace. Detectives say Philpart Jr. fled from deputies but was later located hiding in a trash can with assistance from BSO’s K-9, Aviation, and T.I.T.A.N. units.
Philpart Jr. was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for medical clearance. According to investigators, Philpart Jr. claimed the shooting was self-defense. He faces one count each of possession of a firearm by an adjudicated delinquent, possession of fentanyl with intent to sell, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, improper exhibition of a firearm, and resisting an officer without violence.
At the conclusion of the investigation, the case will be presented to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office to determine if homicide charges will be filed. The investigation continues.
