UPDATE: U.S. 1 NOW SHUT.

UPDATE @ 10p — U.S. 1 has reopened. Card Sound Road remains closed.
UPDATE @ 7:58 p.m. — ALL LANES REMAIN CLOSED ON BOTH U.S. 1 and CARD SOUND ROAD.
UPDATE: ALL LANES REMAIN CLOSED AS OF 6:02 p.m.
MONROE COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Card Sound Road, one of the two main ways in and out of the Florida Keys, is closed as of Tuesday afternoon due to wildfires. Images from Florida Department of Transportation cameras show huge clouds of smoke billowing over the horizon as you look south to the Keys. Card Sound Road closed just after 3:15 p.m.
FDOT’s emergency management information system reports that all lanes of Card Sound Road are closed in both directions. It is listed as a “Major Closure” with this specific report: “Wildfire in Monroe County on Card Sound Road South at C905/C905A. All lanes closed.” A second log entry says emergency vehicles are in the area.

While some traffic management systems are reporting that U.S. 1/Overseas Highway may be a viable alternative, multiple mapping services report that this isn’t really a workable solution. U.S. 1, as of 5:06 p.m., is closed between Mile Marker 121 and 126. Unless you’re driving a duck boat, that seems to eliminate any realistic way to drive back to the mainland.
We’ll continue to monitor the situation and update as soon we learn more from FDOT. For now, if you were planning to head to the Florida Keys tonight, don’t.
