PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A gas main break in western Palm Beach County is leading to a major road closure. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue provided this advisory to BocaNewsNow.com:
>>At 4:30 this afternoon, PBCFR Units were dispatched to the intersection of County Road 827 and US 27 in western Palm Beach County for a reported gas leak. 911 callers stated that workers hit an underground line and they could see and hear the gas escaping. PBCFR Units arrived on scene to find a large gas main leak with dirt, gas and debris blowing approximately 30 feet in the air.
After consulting with FPU, a large, long crack in a 6 inch high pressure metal gas line was confirmed. This type of gas line cannot be clamped. The gas line will have to be gated off, the residual pressure will have to be released, then FPU will be able to start to dig out, remove and replace the damaged metal pipe. Currently, US 27 is closed in both directions from SR 80 in South Bay to the Broward County Line. FPU is bringing in resources from over the state to repair the line, but this is expected to be a lengthy process.
US 27 will remain closed to traffic until the gas line can be shut off and bled. It will reopen once there is no gas in the line. It is advised to remain clear of the area throughout the evening and well into the night/morning hours to allow repair workers to focus on their activities. There may be additional periodic closures of US 27 as repairs are being worked on. Luckily, there are no reported injuries.<<
