Broward County Gunman, Stephen McKenzie, Dies In Hospital. Cops Say Shot And Killed Woman And Three Children.

BROWARD COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The man accused of killing a woman and her three children is dead. The Broward Sheriff’s Office issued this statement to BocaNewsNow.com Monday morning:

>>Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit detectives say the suspect in the shooting that left a mother and her three sons dead, and her daughter injured, has died. Hospital personnel pronounced him deceased on March 27. 

Julie Cruz, and her three sons were shot and killed on Wednesday evening in Pembroke Park. Cruz’s daughter and McKenzie, the shooter, were hospitalized. At the request of Pembroke Park Police Department (PPPD), BSO Homicide Unit detectives took over the case. At approximately 7:36 p.m., March 26, Broward County Regional Communications received a call reporting a shooting at 3181 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd. PPPD officers, BSO deputies and Hallandale Beach Police Department (HBPD) officers responded. 

On scene, PPPD officers located six people shot inside the residence. Cruz and three of her four children were found deceased as a result of the shooting. PPPD officers found McKenzie, who appeared to have suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators also located Cruz’s daughter suffering from gunshot wounds. 

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded and transported McKenzie and Cruz’s daughter to local hospitals for treatment.  The investigation revealed Cruz and McKenzie shared two sons, Nova and Emery McKenzie, who are deceased. Cruz’s son Xion Solomon, who is also deceased, and daughter Phiinyx Solomon, have a different father.  The investigation is ongoing.
