PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — An assisted living facility in Lake Worth Beach was ordered closed by Palm Beach County officials due to extreme heat and other serious problems. While officials did not identify the facility, BocaNewsNow.com has learned it is the Crest Manor facility in Lake Worth Beach. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue issued this statement Tuesday afternoon to BocaNewsNow.com:
>> Late Friday evening, June 6th, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office responded to a local Assisted Living Facility (ALF) located on the 500 block of 3rd Ave South in Lake Worth Beach. While on scene, deputies were approached by multiple residents concerned about excessive heat and a lack of functioning air conditioning. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, together with PBCFR’s Fire Marshal, responded to assist. They were joined by Palm Beach County Public Safety’s Division of Emergency Management, the Florida Division of Emergency Management, and Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration (ACHA) in a coordinated response.
A joint assessment revealed widespread air conditioning failures throughout the four-story building, with multiple rooms at or above 81 degrees. A temporary plan was implemented Friday night to move residents into cooler areas of the facility, and repairs were being made to the air conditioning systems. When crews returned on Saturday, conditions had worsened, particularly on the fourth floor, where some rooms exceeded 90 degrees. Given the deteriorating conditions and health/safety concerns, a joint decision was made to cease operations at the facility. The owner was instructed to mobilize their emergency evacuation plan, and all 42 residents were relocated to other licensed facilities.
Family members were notified by the facility’s administration. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue has since conducted a full fire inspection, and other partner agencies will continue follow-up evaluations to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents. As of today, the facility remains closed until the identified issues, including those related to the air conditioning system and inspection findings, are fully resolved and verified. This was a difficult but necessary decision, made collectively by all responding agencies in the best interest of the residents’ health and safety. <<

Well Done to all responding agencies
County and state personnel took the correct action
You don’t mess with old people not having sufficient air conditioning. I don’t think this is a new development. Facility maintenance should have recognized the need for maintenance and repair long before authorities were called in. Some people need to be fired

Reading this article, I was instantly enraged!! It is hard enough to have to place and entrust a facility to care for a loved one, but so disheartening to know that there are facilities that do not put the needs and living of their residents first and foremost!!!
While I applaud the Palm Beach Couty Sheriff’s office , Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, PBCFR’s Fire Marshal, Palm Beach County Public Safety’s Division of Emergency Management, the Florida Division of Emergency Management, and Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration (ACHA) for the manner in which they reacted and took immediate action, I find it disgusting that the Assisted Living Facility allowed these residents to suffer in such extreme heat!!! Obviously those in charge of the facility knew that the air conditioning was not working properly and should have taken action for the necessary repairs to be made long before things reached such temperatures.
The article states that the facility was ordered closed due to extreme heat and “other serious problems”. While the other serious problems were not detailed in the article, one can only imagine what they might have been. Thankfully, there were residents that were able to express their feelings regarding the heat, but most assuredly there were other residents who could not advocate for themselves and that is not only heartbreaking, but unnacceptable!!!
These facilities charge an astronomical monthly fee for each resident and there is absolutely no acceptable reason that anything within the facility not be in top working order!!! I am relieved that the ALF was closed and my hope is that the responding agencies keep a close watch on the facility as they are making the necessary repairs and correcting any/all other problems within the facility, as well as schedule routine “unannounced visits” to ensure that the facility is operating to the best conditions possible for all of the residents!!!
