Scam Alert FLHSMV
The text you received demanding payment for a motor vehicle issue is fake. Seriously. The government doesn’t text.

BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is not suspending your license by text. The agency is also not fining you by text or email, or calling you to demand cash. While it seems obvious to many, BocaNewsNow.com is receiving a huge number of inquiries from people who are concerned that the texts and emails they’re receiving are real. They’re not.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and local police departments are constantly putting out reminders that these scams are just that — scams. Some of them look completely legit. Others are clearly questionable — using domains like AOL or Gmail, or originating from phone numbers that are out of state or even international. To be clear: if the State of Florida wants you, the State of Florida will find you — and it’s not going to be by email or text. It’s most certainly not going to be from a Gmail account, a phone number originating in Mexico, or accompanied by a demand that you pay in Bitcoin.

If you are still concerned, the State of Florida makes it easy to find out the status of your license. Use this link — yes, it’s legit — for the State of Florida’s official drivers license check. You an also visit the Palm Beach County Tax Collector’s website for access to your vehicle registration status, and more.

If you receive texts demanding payment for a motor vehicle violation, your best bet is to ignore it. If you want to take action, block the number and ‘report it as spam’ if you have an iPhone. If you receive an email, just trash it and block the address. Official communication from the State of Florida will come via U.S. Mail. If it’s really important, if you’re truly accused of a serious crime, you’ll see a SWAT team on your Ring camera just before your door gets knocked down. That’s real. The text telling you pay a fine with a Target gift card is not.
