Arrested In Delray Beach

DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) —A homeowner from Mizner Country Club in West Delray Beach is now facing a DUI charge after he allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel of his Audi on Atlantic Avenue. PBSO says Alexander Smith Jr, of the 16000 block of Double Eagle Trail was more than two times the legal limit when he ultimately provided a breath sample.

Here’s what PBSO documented when a deputy allegedly found Smith, 53, sleeping in his Audi on Atlantic just after 1 a.m. on Sunday.

”I was traveling eastbound on Atlantic Ave, approaching a steady green traffic signal at the intersection of Lexington Club Dr, in my PBSO issued marked patrol vehicle. Upon reaching the intersection, I noticed a black Audi stopped facing east in a left turn lane designated for Lexington Club (housing development). The vehicle was subject to a steady green traffic signal and the driver (sole occupant) was slumped over behind the wheel. I proceeded to make a U-turn and parked behind the vehicle. I activated my red and blue lights and conducted a passenger side approach.

I noticed that the vehicle had been running with the lights on and condensation was building around the car. I shined my light inside of the vehicle and saw that the driver had his eyes closed, head down, and his hands were in his lap. I knocked on the window and the subject woke up. He was asked several times to roll down the window but appeared dazed. His dexterity was slow and he kept fumbling to roll down the window and unlock the door. After sometime, deputies were able to get the subject out of the vehicle.

The subject, later identified as Alexander Smith Jr., stumbled out of the vehicle. His eyes were glassy and his pupils were dilated. I could smell an unknown odor of alcohol emanating from Smith Jr’s breathe as he spoke. He slurred his words and his demeanor was calm. At times he would sway while standing.”

The deputy asked Smith where he was going, to which Smith allegedly replied that he was heading home to Mizner Country Club. Smith allegedly knew that he was in Delray Beach, but when asked to point in the direction of his home, he pointed in the wrong direction according to police.

Smith allegedly had issues performing field sobriety exercises, then provided breath samples registering .216 and .205. The legal limit in Florida is .08. Alexander Smith Jr., was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail and later released on $1,000 bond. A court date is pending.
