DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — West Delray Beach resident Susan DeJong is unlikely to be driving any time soon. Police say she was involved in a crash on Atlantic Avenue, then refused to provide a breath or blood sample for a DUI test. That’s an automatic license suspension in most circumstances in Florida.

The police report filed by the Delray Beach Police Department says that DeJong — of the 9700 block of Isles Cay Drive in Delray — was involved in a crash on September 5th, around 10 p.m. in the 1500 block of West Atlantic Avenue. The crash involved DeJong, driving a white Acura, and the driver of a white Toyota RAV 4. Police, according to the report, focused on DeJong who allegedly had glossy eyes, the odor of alcohol, and had problems keeping her balance.

“DeJong was asked about the crash… during the conversation, her speech was slurred. He eyes were glossy and slightly droopy. DeJong stated that she had just left Vic and Angelos restaurant with friends, where they were drinking and eating.”

DeJong, 69., according to police, had issues completing field sobriety exercises, then refused to take part in a breathalyzer test. She allegedly acknowledged that her refusal could result in the suspension of her license for a year. DeJong was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail where she was charged with one count of DUI and another of refusing to take part in a DUI test. She was locked up and later released on $2,000 bond.
