Karen Petrillo Killed In Lake Worth Beach Crosswalk

A Lake Worth woman was struck and killed in a crosswalk, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

LAKE WORTH BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A Lake Worth Beach woman has died from injuries she sustained after being struck by a vehicle in a crosswalk on Saturday morning. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office tells BocaNewsNow.com that Karen Petrillo, 64, was pronounced dead at Saint Mary’s Medical Center at 11:56 a.m. on Sunday, just over a day after the collision.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:39 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Dixie Highway and Lucerne Avenue. According to investigators, Charles Cherilus, 64, also of Lake Worth Beach, was driving a 2009 Honda Pilot. He was stopped at a red light, facing westbound on Lucerne Avenue at the Dixie Highway intersection.

Investigators state that Petrillo was on the southwest corner, attempting to walk north across Lucerne Avenue in the crosswalk. As the red light for westbound traffic cycled to green, Petrillo entered the crosswalk. At the same time, Cherilus proceeded westbound on the green light, traveling through the intersection.

The front of the Honda Pilot then collided with Petrillo as she continued walking northbound. The impact, according to the report, vaulted her into the air and threw her to the pavement. Cherilus continued a short distance before coming to a controlled stop. Petrillo was transported to St. Mary’s in critical condition. Cherilus was not injured. The invesitgation continues.
