A major winter storm is expected to dramatically hamper travel for much of the U.S., including South Florida, over the next several days.

BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2026 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A massive winter storm expected to affect a huge portion of the United States is already leading to airline warnings and waivers. The storm, expected to bring snow and ice to what the Weather Channel is estimating to be 180 million people, may be one of the worst winter storms in years.

After affecting the Midwest, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, the storm is expected to pummel North Carolina and possibly Georgia. That matters to many in South Florida because Delta and American — two major carriers out of Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach, use Charlotte and Atlanta as major hubs. Delta is already warning travelers to reconsider plans set for the next several days.

A major national high school speech and debate competition set for Emory University has already been moved online. Other major events are expected to follow.

If you are planning to travel this weekend, now is a good time to check your flight options and possibly lock-in changes. We expect major delays and cancelations out of all South Florida airports by Friday evening.
