BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2026 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Cinemark on Airport Road in Boca Raton was evacuated Tuesday afternoon when a Cinemark employee mistakenly thought a guest had a gun.
According to Boca Raton Police in a statement to BocaNewsNow.com, “A Cinemark employee called police saying a person had a firearm with a suppressor, and went upstairs. A large police response quickly determined that there was no weapon – the caller mistakenly thought a tripod was a weapon.”
It is unclear why a guest would have a tripod in a movie theater. While not considered a weapon, tripods are normally associated with cameras which are expressly prohibited in movie theaters. Copyright infringement may not be the same as a weapons offense, but it can lead to federal charges.
No one was injured in Tuesday’s incident. No charges were filed.
