BROWARD COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2026 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A 69-year-old Margate man is dead after a Broward County school bus driven by a Boca Raton man struck him early Wednesday at a bus lot in Pompano Beach, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office in a statement to BocaNewsNow.com.
Alfred Desmandes was walking southwest across the parking lot at 2251 N.W. 18th St. around 5:29 a.m. when a bus driven by 68-year-old Steven Becker, of Boca Raton, hit him. Investigators say Becker had just finished fueling at the pumps on the east side of the building and made a U-turn to head westbound through the lot. Becker told detectives he never saw Desmandes because the parking lot lights weren’t on. The bus struck Desmandes on the front driver’s side as he crossed into its path.
Pompano Beach Fire Rescue rushed Desmandes to Broward Health North Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He died at the hospital Thursday, the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed to BSO traffic homicide detectives.
Investigators say neither speed nor impairment appears to be a factor in the crash. The case remains under investigation.
