UPDATE: 4:20 p.m. — Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw says this started when police were investigating an individual allegedly involved in the robbery of a pizza delivery person. They tracked the car to the Lake Park area and moved in. The driver fled down I-95 where FHP engaged with PBSO in an effort to get the driver to stop. He did not. He exited at Woolbright and headed west where he eventually crashed into a fence near Jog Road.
According to Bradshaw, the PBSO helicopter was over him and watching as he exited the vehicle with something wrapped around his hand or arm. The officers in the helicopter relay to deputies on the ground that it looks the suspect has a gun The suspect then takes off, running up Jog Road. He hides behind cement poles. Deputies try to fire non-lethal weapons at him which apparently had no effect. He then raises his hands in the shooting position, according to Bradshaw, and was “neutralized.” He also apparently yelled “you’re going to have to kill me” just before deputies shot him.
The suspect has been involved in carjacking, robbery, assault, hit and run, disorderly conduct, and sale of cocaine. “He’s obviously a serious bad guy,” said Bradshaw who identified the man only as a 54 year old white male.
UPDATE: 4:15 p.m. — The man shot by police was allegedly a convicted felon who was not armed at the time of the shooting. He was apparently fleeing from police who had pursued him in a stolen vehicle. He crashed the vehicle and fled on foot before he was shot, according to police. His name has not been released.
UPDATE: One person is confirmed killed after being shot by police. Jog road is completely closed between Woolbright and Grand Isles.
