BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2026 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Got old pills crowding the medicine cabinet? Palm Beach County residents can get rid of unused, unwanted or expired medications Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at four Walgreens stores: 1601 S. Congress Ave. in Boynton Beach, 101 N. Main St. in Belle Glade, 6558 S. Lantana Road in Lantana and 10420 Forest Hill Blvd. in Wellington. The Palm Beach County Behavioral Health Coalition is hosting the drop-off with the Drug Enforcement Administration as part of the 31st National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
Bring tablets, capsules, patches and other accepted prescription medications. Liquids must stay sealed in their original containers so nothing leaks. Syringes, needles, other sharps and illicit drugs will be turned away, and anyone needing to dispose of sharps can call the Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County at 561-837-5900.
The national program has collected more than 21 million pounds of medication since it began in 2010, and organizers say clearing out old prescriptions cuts the risk of accidental poisoning, since young children and pets can mistake pills for candy or treats. Tossing drugs the wrong way can also end up in the water. A 2023 study involving Florida International University and Bonefish & Tarpon Trust found pharmaceuticals in the blood and tissue of redfish sampled from Florida waters.
“We are excited to once again offer four Take Back Day locations throughout Palm Beach County, making it easier for residents to safely dispose of unwanted medications,” said Ryan Wertepny, executive director of the coalition.
Can’t make it Saturday? Year-round disposal sites are listed at PBCDrop.org. Organizations interested in hosting a resource table at future Take Back Day events can email prevention@pbcbhc.org, and more on the national program is available at DEATakeBack.com.
