BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2021 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — An inmate of the South Bay Correctional Facility, run by Boca Raton’s “GEO Group,” is suing the company. He claims that dentists in the facility said he needed reconstructive dental work due to “rotting teeth” but was never offered the treatment.

The inmate, Stefan Johnson, said he assumed that arrangements were being made since he’s an inmate.

But the suit he filed against GEO Group states that no one did anything. Now, his teeth are allegedly rotting and he’s in pain. According to Johnson, this has been ongoing for several years and he doesn’t understand why GEO is withholding the care that he says he needs.

“The first 3 or 4 times plaintiff was called (to the dental facility) there would be about 20 to 30 other guys there for an appointment. Plaintiff (was there) all day and was never seen by the dentist. After those time times whenever 20-30 guys were there plaintiff only waited about two hours. Plaintiff believes the dental department was playing a numbers game. If they could get as many guys as they could to refuse “treatment,” then they would be seen as fulfilling their obligations to the dental plan and collect as many $5 co-pays for those without the dental plan, without having to actually do work. As of this filing, plaintiff still hasn’t received any dental work…”

Johnson alleges in his suit that his mouth is often swollen and painful as his teeth continue to rot.

No immediate response to the suit was filed by GEO Group. The Boca Raton-based company operates 58 facilities in the United States with 73,472 beds. The GEO Group website states: “The GEO Group is committed to providing leading, evidence-based rehabilitation programs to individuals while in-custody and post-release into the community through the GEO Continuum of Care®.”

Johnson was sentenced in 2008 to 25 years for trafficking heroin. He was found guilty by a Palm Beach County jury.
