Department Stores Have Tremendous Surveillance Systems. Boca Raton’s Barbara Shortt Allegedly Didn’t Know…

BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2022 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Major department stores have major security and surveillance systems that keep eyes on everything going on in the store. Yet time and time again, the Boca Raton Police Department is called to the mall to arrest someone shoplifting — someone who apparently didn’t realize that everything they do is being watched from cameras above.
The latest: Barbara Shortt of the 400 block of NW 13th Drive in Boca Raton. Boca PD arrested her for larceny after Macy’s Security detained her for stealing from the men’s department. This is how Boca PD documented the incident:
“(The Macy’s security officer) stated that prior to calling BRPD, he was monitoring store cameras for signs of shoplifting. While viewing cameras, he observed a white female, later identified as Barbara Short, in the men’s section accompanied by an adult male. The officer stated that he witnessed the male hand (her) a package of undershirts (Value: $59.50) which she began to carry around. The male later handed Barbara an additional package of undershirts (Value: $69.50).
Barbara then concealed the items inside of her large shoulder bag. Barbara then walked to the sales counter and spoke with the cashier.
It should be noted that Barbara did not remove the concealed items from her bag. Barbara then selected a black Polo hat (Value: $49.50) and began walking towards the interior mall entrance while holding the hat in her hand. Security maintained constant visual surveillance of Barbara as she then exited Macy’s into the mall. After Barbara passed all points of sale without attempting payment, she was apprehended and all items were recovered.”
Barbara Shortt was later arrested by Boca Raton Police and booked into the Palm Beach County Jail where bond was set at $3000 — significantly more than the cost paying for undershirts and a Polo cap.
