DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2023 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A so-called “controlled burn” got a bit out of control — at least from a smoke perspective — near U.S. 441 and Atlantic Avenue mid-day Monday.
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue responded to the scene which was closer to the intersection of Smith Sandy Road and U.S. 441. Fire Rescue issued the following statement to BocaNewsNow.com.
“At approximately noon today, PBCFR Units were dispatched to an Investigation at the 1400 Block of Smith Sundy Road in western Delray for reports of large amounts of smoke and limited visibility on US441 in the area. Units made contact with the property owner and Fire Operations Manager regarding the controlled burn that was going on. They said that they would be winding down the operation for the day. This was a controlled burn, and unfortunately the smoke did not dissipate as rapidly as intended. The situation is expected to continue to improve.”
The smoke could be seen for several miles, according to witnesses contacting the BocaNewsNow.com newsroom. The controlled burn is unrelated to the controversial building tentatively approved for G.L. Homes just north of Clint Moore along U.S. 441.
