DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2023 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The Delray Beach woman who police say was videotaping crowds on her phone while driving on Atlantic Avenue New Year’s Eve, then slammed into a crowd of people killing one, just had her license suspended for six months. Nadya Pearlman, 75, of 5277 Bolero Circle in Delray Beach was also fined $1000 and must attend driving school.

Pearlman was driving on Atlantic Avenue around 11 p.m. on December 31st while holding her phone and videotaping near the Intracoastal Bridge. As pedestrians crossed Atlantic Avenue, Pearlman slammed into them. Multiple people were injured. Area resident Birinder Singh later died from his injuries. The other victims are in varied states of recovery.

BocaNewsNow.com learned that Pearlman, 75 at the time of the crash, entered a plea of “no contest” to a charge of careless driving — the only charge filed against her. She was sentenced to driving school, a license suspension for six months, and a $1000 fine. There were no charges filed specifically relating to the death.

The Delray Beach Police Department initially refused to provide details about the crash, but ultimately released a police report following a lawsuit threat from BocaNewsNow.com. It remains unclear why it took Delray Beach Police multiple weeks to release information. It’s also unclear why Perlman was only charged with careless driving despite the death of a victim. The following was written by an investigating officer in the police report obtained by BocaNewsNow.com.

“Post Miranda I advised Pearlman that several independent witnesses on scene advised officers that they observed her to be videoing on her cell phone at the time of the crash. Due to the phone being potential evidence and possibly being the causation of the crash, the phone was seized for evidentiary purposes. Pearlman stated that she was driving down East Atlantic Avenue wishing people Happy New Year While using her phone to video. Pearlman later admitted she was in fact on the phone at the time of the crash and gave consent to search her phone to include her videos.”

Bolero Circle, which Pearlman lists as her residential address, is near Military Trail and Lake Ida Road. No civil suit has been filed at this time, according to records from the Palm Beach County Clerk of Courts.
