UPDATE AT 3 p.m. — The 14-year-old juvenile male student has been arrested and faces one count of attempted felony murder. He has been transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center for processing. To clarify the initial preliminary information that was previously released, the juvenile male student was initially detained by several school staff members, not a Broward Sheriff’s Office school resource officer. An SRO is not assigned to this campus. Additionally, the school has returned to normal status.

Just after 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 12, Broward Regional Communications received a report of a stabbing at Bright Horizons Center in Deerfield Beach. Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to the scene. The preliminary investigation reveals that a juvenile male student cut a teacher with an object.
The BSO school resource officer and school staff detained the juvenile male suspect on campus, and arriving deputies immediately began providing medical care to the victim. BSFR transported the victim to an area hospital for treatment of injuries not expected to be life-threatening. At this time, the center is on a secure status, and there is no active threat.
BSO’s Threat Management Unit will investigate the incident.
