UPDATE: While the police report states Shannon is an Ophthalmologist, Florida records indicate that he is a licensed Optometrist. We have updated this story with Florida records, but note the official police record.
DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2023 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A Delray Beach Optometrist, allegedly driving on the rim of his BMW, was arrested for DUI by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. According to a police report obtained by BocaNewsNow.com, Erin Shannon provided breath samples of .214 and .219 — nearly three times the legal limit of .08.
Police stopped Shannon Sunday night in the area of Linton Boulevard and Michelangelo Blvd near Kings Point and Vizcaya. A witness told police that he saw the man — later identified as Shannon — driving a Black BMW on the rim, apparently creating sparks from the friction of the rim hitting the road.
“I then walked around the Black BMW with front passenger fender damage to the rim and no rubber tire,” wrote the investigating Deputy in the police report. “The vehicle was registered to Erin. S Shannon, the same person (the witness) positively identified as the driver. I looked inside the vehicle for alcoholic beverages but did not locate any. I then made contact with the driver, Erin S. Shannon, wearing a black button down shirt, tan shorts and black slides. I asked Shannon what happened to his vehicle and he stated his tire blew and he continued driving because his vehicle had “run flats” tires which means he could continue driving. While speaking to Shannon, I detected an obvious and strong odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage emitting from his person and face area. The odor intensified as he spoke. His eyes were blood shot and glassy.”
Also wrote the Deputy: “I asked if he was in a car accident he stated he had not been in a car accident, his tire blew, and he didn’t know how. I asked if he knew where this occurred and he stated it was by ‘Copans Road’ which is in Pompano Beach. I asked him long he had been driving on the rim and he stated approximately 4 miles, which could not have been the case.”
Shannon, according to police, failed multiple field sobriety tests and then was transported for a breath alcohol exam, which he also failed. Shannon was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail and later released on his own recognizance. He is officially charged with DUI — over .15. He lists the 1000 block of West Heritage Club Circle in Delray Beach as his home address.
