BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2023 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Travelers hoping to fly in and out of South Florida Tuesday night endured massive delays and in some cases cancellations as bad weather up and down the Eastern seaboard led to huge air traffic control problems.
Hundreds of flights were delayed and canceled across the country. In South Florida, scores of flights were delayed or axed. Several flights out of Palm Beach International Airport logged what are nearly unprecedented delays for the airport, including an American Airlines flight to Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA). Originally set for a 6:40 p.m. departure, the flight was delayed until 7:20, then 7:50, then 8:30p, then 9:30 p.m, then in span of several minutes to 1:30 a.m. and then 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The plane had arrived from DCA, but Air Traffic Control — according to the airline — delayed the departure so much that the flight crew timed out.
Watch video of the announcement — and the reaction from passengers — below. Passengers were first told to retrieve their bags and come back in the morning, but American Airlines later said all bags were being kept on the plane overnight.
As of early Wednesday, FlightAware.com and its “Misery Map” is already reporting hundreds of delays for flights into, out of, or within the United States, with the cancellation count rising.
Check with your airline Wednesday before heading to the airport. And remember: most airline interaction can now occur within the airline’s app. There’s often no need to stand in line at a customer service counter.
