The Battle of Florida, a college football all-star game featuring NFL draft-eligible seniors who played high school or college ball in the Sunshine State, will take place Saturday,
January 21 (8:00 p.m.) at the Florida Atlantic University (FAU) football stadium in Boca Raton. The game (www.thebattleofflorida.com) is a showcase for the state’s talent looking to catch the eye of NFL coaches and scouts.
Pitting North Florida against South Florida, the teams will be coached by legendary college coaches Bobby Bowden and Howard Schnellenberger, who have 535 wins, 27 bowl victories, and three national championships between them. They will lead representatives from ten Florida universities and dozens of high schools in a game that will be broadcast nationally on the FOX College Sports Network. Kenny Albert, Gino Torretta, and Sid Rosenberg make up the announcing team, with the broadcast directed by ten-time Emmy winner Sandy Grossman. Grossman has directed ten Super Bowls in his television career.
The state’s “Big Three” of Florida, Florida State, and Miami are well represented, with nearly 20 players from those storied programs, including receivers Deonte Thompson, Bert Reed, and Aldarius Johnson. Meanwhile, Dominique Davis, the East Carolina quarterback who attended Lakeland’s Kathleen High School, seeks to improve an NFL draft status that already projects him to be a mid-round pick while Florida Atlantic’s Kevin Cyrille will be playing on his home field for the last time.
