BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) — If dance is your thing — or someone you know’s thing — you might want to pick up tickets for an upcoming event at Florida Atlantic University. Being Friday, we’ve just cut and pasted their press release:
Florida Atlantic University’s department of theatre and dance in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters presents the 2012 Repertory Dance Theatre Ensemble on Friday, February 10 at 7 p.m., Saturday, February 11 at 1 and 7 p.m., and Sunday, February 12 at 1 p.m. Performances take place in the University Theatre, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. Single tickets are $20, FAU faculty, staff and alumni are $16, FAU students are $12 and group prices are available. Tickets can be purchased at www.fauevents.com or 1-800-564-9539. The program includes partial nudity and may not be suitable for all audiences.
The program includes several pieces written and performed by guest artists. The opening performance is “Watch for the Morning,” a male duet choreographed by Charleston-based choreographer Jennifer Strelkauskas. In this piece, based upon Psalm 130, two men are caught in the eternal struggle between yearning for the past and reaching for the future. In another presentation, Jim May, artistic director of the Sokolow Theatre Dance Ensemble, has restaged sections of Sokolow’s “Lyric Suite.” Performers include Susan Fulks, Clarence Brooks, and Akeem Edwards. The dramatic marriage of Anna Sokolow’s lyrical movement with Alban Berg’s evocative music is the stark environment for an emotionally charged dance.
“Unchastened the Film” is an inspirational dance film short about breast cancer survivor Catherine Musinsky’s examination of her body and beauty through dance and henna.
Guest performer Yanci, an internationally renowned mime and colleague of the late Marcel Marceau, is reprising two of his signature works “Man and Machine” and “Cage.” These two pieces of classical pantomime focus on themes of “the folly of man as creator” and “becoming encased in the structures we build,” respectively.
Stacee Lanz is collaborating and performing with Kori Epps, a former member of Klein Dance, and Deborah Kahan, who presented two works at the Repertory Dance Ensemble last year, on a premiere about passages in a woman’s life titled “Or Something Like It.” Also, New World School of the Arts senior Andrea Ollarvide’s presents “Man Is Baby,” a solo commissioned by Clarence Brooks which begs the question, “Who will be there at the end when all is said and done?”
Finally, Joey Bargsten along with members of memeTM (media experimental ensemble) will present a multimedia event with visual elements, music, and dance titled “Trialog and Interludes.” This film imagines a three-way dialog through contemporary means between the works of Korean American artist Nam June Paik and avant-garde collaborators in life and work John Cage and Merce Cunningham.
FAU’s performances are supported in part by the Palm Beach County Cultural Council, Palm Beach County and the Tourist Development Council.
