Florida Atlantic University Honored For Community Service

BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com via FAU) —  Florida Atlantic University’s Weppner Center for Civic Engagement and Service was recently honored by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) with a place on the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary community service and meaningful outcomes in their service to America’s communities.  The Center was recognized for its high level of participation by students in innovative community service programs.
“Being named to the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll is a well-deserved recognition of FAU faculty, staff and students, who graciously share their time and talents to volunteer programs and academic service-learning course projects,” said Nori Carter, director of the Weppner Center. “Committing to serving our community benefits both the University and those in need of a helping hand.”
Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service learning and civic engagement.  The CNCS recognized 642 colleges and universities.  Of that total, 513 were named to the Honor Roll, 110 received the recognition of Honor Roll with distinction and five received the Presidential Award.
The Community Service Honor Roll increases the public’s awareness of the significant role that colleges and universities and their students, faculty and staff play in helping to solve social problems in American communities.
“Through service, these institutions are creating the next generation of leaders by challenging students to tackle tough issues and create positive impacts in the community,” said Robert Velasco, acting chief executive officer of CNCS. “We applaud the Honor Roll schools, their faculty and students for their commitment to make service a priority in and out of the classroom. Together, service and learning increase civic engagement while fostering social innovation among students, empowering them to solve challenges within their communities.”
The Corporation for National and Community oversees the Honor Roll in collaboration with the Department of Education, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Campus Compact and the American Council on Education.  The CNCS is a federal agency that engages more than five million Americans in service through its Senior Corps, AmeriCorps and Learn and Serve America programs, and leads President Barack Obama’s national call to service initiative, United We Serve.
