BOCA RATON, FL ( — Great weather and great people led to a great event this past weekend for Boca Raton Community Middle School. We love it when schools and students send us press releases and here is one we received for the schools's first 5k.

Boca Raton Community Middle School (BRCMS) hosted their first 5K Fun Run and Walk with 234 runners and walkers participating on Saturday, November 3. Registered runners, walkers and participating sponsors raised $3,397.06 for the school.

The theme of the event was “Step It Up To New Heights” and included Boca Raton Helicopters landing a helicopter on the school baseball field to have BRCMS Principal – Mr. Peter Slack board and take off. The helicopter followed the race as it progressed to have Mr. Slack cheer on all participants along the route. “We had an excellent turnout for the first of what we hope will be many 5K fun runs to come,” said 5K Fun Run and Walk Co-Chair Andrea Williams, “It was a fun event! We showed some great school spirit among all of us!!!” said 5K Fun Run and Walk Co-Chair Maureen Aloumanis.

Together with the assistance of BRCMS Athletic Director, Mr. Gerald Burke, PTSA, school faculty and staff they pulled together what was said to be one of the most spirited and community driven events that the school has ever hosted. Mr. Peter Slack awarded the Boca Raton Pop Warner Football & Cheer team the winning trophy with an average team time of just over 24 minutes. In addition to the team trophy, 2 pre-registered students were selected prior to the race and flew back in the helicopter to Boca Raton Executive Airport.
