HAS DISTRICT DECLARED WAR ON TEACHERS, STAFF?

BY: ANDREW COLTON | EDITOR AND PUBLISHER

BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) — The Palm Beach County School District appears to be declaring war on its teachers and staffers, crafting ominous, oppressive language in a “rules” document set to be approved at a Wednesday afternoon school board meeting.

The latest version of the “Employee Protocols Due To COVID-19” guide contains this astonishing language:

“Employees are encouraged to utilize outdoor spaces, their personal vehicles or off-district property locations for meals, when possible. Employees should not be without facial covering for this purpose for more than fifteen (15) consecutive minutes. Eating and drinking may not be used as an excuse not to wear a facial covering”

Employees should not be without facial covering for this purpose for more than fifteen (15) consecutive minutes. Eating and drinking may not be used as an excuse not to wear a facial covering”

The suggestion that teachers should eat lunch in their own cars was approved by the legal department for the Palm Beach County School District and apparently written by Human Resources chief Dr. Gonzalo LaCava. LaCava is already under fire from the Palm Beach County Classroom Teacher’s Association for failing to devise a workable plan for teachers who wish to teach remotely due to health or other concerns.

Teachers were originally told “distance” teaching would continue to be an option.

LaCava spent much of the summer as a candidate for the superintendent’s position in the Sarasota County School District. He was not chosen.

That teachers and staffers are encouraged to eat lunch in their vehicles only further supports the belief that school district leaders have no workable plan for managing students, teachers and staffers in each of the district’s buildings.

INSURANCE GAMES

Another item of note in the document below: teachers who test positive for COVID-19 once school begins are presumed to have NOT contracted the virus at school, potentially denying teachers the ability to file worker’s compensation claims.

“Risk management and its adjusters will investigate workers compensation eligibility if a notice of injury is filed. At this time, only first responders (School Police) are presumed to have contracted the virus at work. All others must file health insurance claims.”

That language apparently comes from Deputy Superintendent Keith Oswald. He too spent much of the summer as a candidate for the Sarasota position. Like LaCava, he was passed over as well. Oswald, LaCava and Palm Beach County School Superintendent Dr. Donald Fennoy are all being blamed for the district’s apparent lack of preparation for schools to reopen safely with workable plans for teachers and students.

The teacher conduct document, now set to be discussed Wednesday afternoon during a Palm Beach County School Board meeting, is below.
