BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2021 MetroDesk Media, LLC) (News App readers click here) — As Palm Beach County extended its mask mandate to at least March 19th, there is growing concern that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will follow Texas’ lead and prohibit future mask requirements.

Medical professionals and business owners contacting BocaNewsNow.com say the mandate must remain — likely for months — if there is any hope of truly getting COVID-19 under control.

“DeSantis needs to stay the course,” said one Palm Beach County medical professional who wished to remain anonymous fearing backlash from anti-maskers. “His approach has been far from perfect, but at least local municipalities can do what they need to do. If he follows the lead of Texas Governor Gregg Abbott, we’re going to be in real trouble.”

“Masks need to be with us for months,” said another. “They work. Our (infection) numbers are heading in the right direction. That will change quickly if DeSantis does anything stupid just to get attention or play politics.”

Even local business owners are concerned.

“It took a while, but my customers finally understand that masking is good and that it creates a safer environment inside,” said woman who owns a mid-sized store in unincorporated Palm Beach County. “If Gov. DeSantis pulls a Texas, I’m going to have a very hard time telling people that they need to wear a mask to come inside.”

But the feeling is not shared by everyone. BocaNewsNow.com received several almost threatening emails overnight from readers outraged that we reported Florida’s dramatic COVID-19 case count. After days of decline, reported 1,810 new cases on Sunday but 7,075 new cases on Monday. Even if there was a state reporting problem — and there is no indication that happened — the 7,075 new cases is the highest new case count in a week.

“WE ARE SO OVER THIS !!!! LET PEOPLE LIVE THEIR LIVES YOU SOCIALIST HORRIBLE PEOPLE !!!!! DISCRIMINATING AGAINST THOSE WHO DONT WANT TO WEAR YOUR F ING MASKS, YOU ARE SO PATHETIC!!!!

ITS CALLED REALITY… GET ON WITH IT!”

There is no indication, at this point, that Governor DeSantis plans to ban mask mandates, however, DeSantis declared early in the pandemic that local municipalities could not fine individuals who chose to not wear masks.
