All Entrances Closed. Traffic Blocked. Planes Temporarily Stopped.
UPDATE: 8:57: This was a suspected explosive device incident. There was NO explosive device. From Broward Sheriff’s Office:
“At approximately 1:10 a.m. on Thursday, April 1, Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport received information regarding suspicious wires found in a vehicle parked on the upper level of the airport. BSO deputies secured the area around the vehicle, evacuated people in the vicinity and shut down all traffic into and out of the airport. BSO’s Bomb Squad responded to the scene and, after investigating, determined that the wires were not a threat. An all clear was given shortly after 7 a.m.”
UPDATE: 8:30 a.m.: Officials are only calling this a “security incident.” We expect to have more details this morning. Meantime, massive flight delays both outbound and inbound continue. Here’s a look at part of the FLL Flight Board as of 8:31 a.m. It is showing many delays of multiple hours. Several inbound plans were diverted during the incident. Check with your airline for the latest details affecting your travel.
UPDATE: 7:08 a.m: The airport just told us that roads are slowly starting to reopen. Expect delays to continue for several hours as passengers must be re-screened, flight crews must make their way through the traffic and hoards of people, and operations must come back online. No immediate word as to what led to the closure.
