BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2021 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A Boca Raton man allegedly lunged at Boynton Beach Police Officer Dennis Castro while Officer Castro attempted to lock him up as part of a DUI arrest.
Police say Stephen Hazel of Kingsbridge Street in Boca Raton crashed into a car, then was caught on tape drinking a White Claw beer while simultaneously trying to throw out several cans of White Claw.
It happened in the parking lot of Tint World in Boynton Beach. Hazel is now charged with DUI with property damage, assault on a law enforcement officer, and leavening the scene of a crash with property damage.
This is the police narrative from the arrest. We have edited just slightly for clarity.
”I responded to the parking lot of 1630 S. Congress Ave (Tint World) in reference to a Vehicular Accident. This incident occurred within the City of Boynton Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida. Caller advised that a W / M operating a Black Toyota Tacoma had struck a parked Blue Honda Accord within the above parking lot and that the W / M was attempting to leave. Caller advised that the male appeared to be impaired. While arriving to the area, caller advised that the male walked off in the Leisureville Community and that he (caller) was following him. The community is just east of the parking lot of the incident. As I drove south on SW 22nd St I observed two males and a Blue Honda Accord in the roadway. As I got closer one of the males, the man I later learned to be the above caller began to flag me down. The caller quickly stated that the other male on scene, W / M Hazel, Stephen, had struck his parked vehicle within the Tint World parking lot and then fled the scene. The caller advised that as he was following Hazel, Hazel began to walk in the back yards of residences and was drinking a White Claw beer while doing so. The caller then pointed to a White Claw beer can along the roadway and stated that Hazel threw that can there.”
“Hazel was trying to stand in a normal manner but kept leaning side to side and losing his balance at times. After hearing a brief statement from the caller, I asked Hazel what was going on, which Hazel stated nothing. I asked Hazel what he was doing, which he stated nothing just walking. I asked Hazel if he was involved in a crash prior to my arrival, which he denied. While Hazel was speaking he had a difficult time keeping his eyes open. Hazel’s eyes were bloodshot / glassy. Hazel was very unsteady on his feet. Hazel’s speech was thick and slurred and an odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath which intensified as he-spoke. I then requested Hazel to sit on the push bar on my vehicle while I further spoke with the caller. While walking, Hazel swayed side to side and was unstable. The caller stated that while at work at Tint World he observed the Toyota Tacoma drive through the parking lot. The caller stated that the driver, Hazel, was driving the vehicle in an erratic way, jerking the vehicle back and forth. The caller stated that has Hazel was doing that he almost hit a tree within the parking. The caller then observed Hazel place the Toyota into reverse and back into a parked Blue Honda Accord. The caller advised the rear bumper of the Toyota struck the front right corner of his vehicle.”
“Vehicles were later inspected and damage was consistent with the caller’s statement and paint transfer. The caller stated that Hazel then exited the vehicle and began to collect a large amount of empty White Claw beer cans and proceeded to the throw them away in the parking lot dumpster. The caller stated that Hazel then began to walk towards Woolbright Rd with a closed beer in one hand and physically drinking another White Claw beer. The caller advised that he followed him until I located them both. The caller had video of Hazel walking through the parking lot with all the beers in his hand and tossing the beers in the dumpster. Video also showed Hazel walking away from the parking drinking the White Claw beer. Video also shows Hazel walking through the back yards of residences that he does not live at or know the residents. Video shows Hazel walking between two residences and tossing his close White Claw beer in a white recycle bin.”
“I properly positioned my fully marked patrol vehicle to continue my investigation. Once Hazel and I were in front of my patrol vehicle I advised Hazel that the investigation was being audio and video recorded. I then asked Hazel again if he was involved in a crash today, which he stated no. Hazel was being uncooperative with the crash investigation. Therefore, I advised Hazel that I have concluded my crash investigation and was now conducting a DUI Criminal Investigation. Hazel stated that he was walking to his residence in Boca Raton. When asked Hazel where was he coming from, Hazel advised stated that he ate at Tijuana Flats on Old Boynton Rd and Congress Ave around 530 and was just walking. Hazel then stated that he was heading to catch a bus to head home. After explaining to Hazel that there was video of him operating a motor vehicle in the Tint World parking lot, he still denied being involved in a crash.”
(Police then arrested Hazel and transported him to the blood/breath alcohol testing facility).
“While placing Hazel into a holding cell within the PBCJ BAT Facilities, Hazel looked at me and stated “are you ready, Castro?” Hazel had both arms to his side of her with both fists balled up. I took a step back and requested Hazel to enter the cell. Hazel turned and entered. Once in, Hazel turned away and in an aggressive manner raised his right arm in a horizontal 90 degrees manner, cocked it back and swung at me. I was able to quickly move and close the cell door prior to getting hit with Hazel hand. As Hazel attempted to hit me (another officer) directly behind me witnessed the incident. Based on the facts, Hazel was charged with Assault of LEO pursuant with F.S.S. 784.07.2.A, Driving Under the Influence W / Property Damage pursuant with F.S.S. 316. 193.3.C.1 and Leaving the Scene of Crash W / Property Damage pursuant to F.S.S. 316.061.1. Hazel was processed and later TOT PBCJ. Incident was captured via BWC.”
Hazel was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail and later released on his own recognizance. A court date is pending.
