Parents Want Mask Mandates To Return. CDC Says Masks Should Be Worn. School Board Members Not Saying Anything, For Now…

Did Dr. Robinson Lose Her Voice?

BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2021 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Members of the Palm Beach County School Board are not answering questions concerning the CDC’s new guidance that all students, teachers, staffers and visitors wear mask inside schools.

The school board’s unwillingness to take action following the new CDC guidance is notable, but parents contacting BocaNewsNow.com say the silence from Dr. Debra Robinson, a medical doctor who has been a vocal proponent of policies to keep students and staffers safe, is troubling.

No board member responded to individual questions posed Tuesday by BocaNewsNow.com.

While the board members are outwardly silent, sources close to the school district suggest that pressure is mounting for the “optional” masking policy to return to a mandate before the school year starts on August 10th. One scenario: Dr. Donald Fennoy, the outgoing Palm Beach County School District Superintendent, could unilaterally impose a mask mandate before he is replaced by interim Superintendent Michael Burke — the current school district Chief Financial Officer.

Barbara McQuinn, Alexandria Ayala, Karen Brill, Erica Whitfield, Frank Barbieri, Marcia Andrews and Debra Robinson, M.D., all ignored requests from BocaNewsNow.com for comment on masking in the school district following the CDC’s announcement on Tuesday. Dr. Debra Robinson has previously called for a review of the policy in the midst of surging COVID-19 numbers in Palm Beach County.

Florida again leads the nation in new COVID-19 cases and deaths. Parents responding to BocaNewsNow.com surveys overwhelmingly want mandatory masking as the school year begins. That position is the polar opposite of surveys conducted during the 2020-2021 school year when the majority of respondents wanted masks to be optional.

Among the comments we received over the past day — and we haven’t asked for comments for nearly a week:

“As a teacher and mom, I feel masks need to be enforced and mandatory for all elementary students come August 2021. The Delta variant is a serious one, affecting younger children. This data is on facts from local hospitals, which reflect the communities at this time. Children under the age of 12 should be required to wear a mask until they are all eligible for a vaccine.

It’s important to take responsibility and do our part to slow and reduce this virus. Covid still exists and is not going anywhere. I am hopeful that logical decision is made for the safety and health of our families.”

No comment concerning mask mandates from Palm Beach County School Board Member Alexandria Ayala. She did not respond to a request from BocaNewsNow.com following the CDC’s guidance change.

“Masks save lives. I will not send my kids to school without a mask mandate. It’s our responsibility to keep them safe. My 4 year old son and children 2 and over MUST wears masks. Look at the delta variant. Mandate masks then I’ll send my son to school.”

“My husband and I both work in the medical field. My husband is a clinical Psychotherapist and I am an EMT. We feel masks should be mandatory in ANY school settings. We will protest and not send our children until there is a mask mandate. No questions asked children are vulnerable and we need to do everything to protect them. And so SHOULD our MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS stand up for us parents who worry day in and out. We are Vaccinated however our children are not they are too young. And must be protected wearing masks social distancing washing hands.”

No comment concerning mask mandates from Palm Beach County School Board Member and Chair Frank Barbieri, Jr., Esq. He did not respond to a request from BocaNewsNow.com following the CDC’s guidance change.

“No mask mandate, no mandated vaccines for school staff will cause me to keep my five year old at home until he is vaccinated. The price of an online school experience is small compared to the value of my child’s life and long-term health. If this disregard for science continues we will be selling and moving back to Michigan. If I can’t trust the school district to provide a safe learning environment I certainly can’t trust them to provide a high quality education.
I am appalled at professionals like Dr. Alonso and Mr. Barbieri who let uninformed and unruly parents influence them to forgo their professional responsibilities to ensure the health and safety of children.”

For all of the parents and teachers supporting a reinstated mask mandate, there continues to be a vocal minority that doesn’t believe masks works, and seems to still question whether COVID-19 is real.

Wrote an area mortgage broker: “My children WILL NOT wear a mask this year. I will walk them both into the school on day one without a mask. You will need to call the police to escort us out if you want us to leave campus.  At that point, both will be enrolled at a private school. Kids should not be required to get a vaccine. Enough already with this nonsense!”

And wrote a mom: “Absolutely not!! Ut has been proven that children are less susceptible to contracting the virus. Please stop doing this to our children. You will mostly definitely be met with pushback and outrage from more parents than you anticipate. This has gone on for long enough. And these increase in numbers doesn’t mean anything. The delta variant is far less to make your lived one’s I’ll. It’s literally like a cold.”
