BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2022 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Nearly ten percent of all school buses in operation for the Palm Beach County School District have a problem with a safety device.

A spot check of stop sign arms, devices that remind drivers that children may be in the bus at the end of a run, video camera monitoring systems, and other items revealed the devices were non-functional or not functioning correctly.

The check also determined that fourteen percent of daily bus driver and attendant pre-trip and post-trip inspection reports were not available, and 38-percent did not indicate that the “post-trip” inspection report was complete. Part of the post-trip inspection report confirms that children are not being left on a closed school bus in a bus yard.

The Office of the Inspector General, which ran the inspection, also says that video surveillance recordings of bus activity are not being kept as required by policy.

It was not immediately clear if employees could face sanctions for not reporting failed systems or completing reports as required, or if transportation managers could face demotions by permitting unsafe buses on the road with drivers who are not submitting or completing required reports.

The School Board meeting is set for March 23rd.
