BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2022 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The COVID-19 case count in Florida just jumped by near record levels, as the positivity rate statewide, and in Palm Beach County, is soaring.
The Florida Department of Health, which only releases data every week by order of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, just reported 60,204 new COVID-19 cases logged during the period between May 13th and May 19th. That is a dramatic jump from the 39,374 cases logged the week before.
The true number is likely substantially higher, as home testing kits do not require the reporting of positive results. People who test positive at home, and don’t call the Florida Department of Health, are not counted.
Florida’s positivity rate statewide is now 13.4 percent.
In Palm Beach County, the situation is worse than the statewide numbers, with the local positivity rate now recorded as 16 percent. That is the second highest positivity rate in Florida, trailing only Flagler County which is reporting a positivity rate of 18.5 percent. Broward County reports 14.3 percent. Miami-Dade reports 13.4 percent.
A total of 74,330 people have now died in Florida from COVID-19.
