BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2022 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Travelers flying in and out of South Florida’s three major airports today are again finding themselves dealing with delayed and canceled flights. Delta, Jetblue, Spirit, Southwest, and others are all showing flights issues. FlightAware.com reports 782 cancelled flights into, out of, or within the United States on Saturday, with 3,595 delays.

While a headache today for fliers, it is an ominous sign for the annual ritual next weekend of South Florida kids flying to overnight camps in Maine, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Pennsylvania.

Many of the flights pre-booked by camps — including flights between Fort Lauderdale and New York’s major airports — were canceled Saturday. There’s no suggestion that a cancellation on one Saturday means doom and gloom for the following Saturday, but it certainly is notable on a largely sunny, clear day up and down the Atlantic seaboard. Rebooking a group of 20 kids from one camp and 30 from another isn’t as simple as two traveling companions being rerouted from Miami to Minneapolis with a plane change in Seattle.

Most overnight camps fly South Florida campers — with a chaperone or counselor — to JFK, Newark, or LaGuardia, then bus campers to their specific camps across the Northeast. A canceled flight — before this year — has largely been a rarity. But this year is different. Airlines continue to suffer from overbooking and understaffing, which means delays are routine. There are rarely available seats within days of a flight being canceled.

In Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach Saturday, Delta — once known for reliability — canceled flights to its major hubs of Atlanta and Detroit. United canceled multiple flights to its hub in Newark. Discount carriers Spirit and Jetblue canceled or delayed flights across the United States.
