BOCA RATON, FL ( (Copyright © 2022 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A Boca Raton woman is facing a DUI charge after the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office says she drove into a pole in Wellington, then was found with a bottle of wine in the back seat.

Elizabeth Barrett, 67, of the 6300 block of Via Tierra in Boca Raton was arrested by PBSO early Tuesday morning in the area of US 441 and Forest Hill Blvd. in Wellington. The following is the arresting Deputy’s narrative of events:

Upon arrival, I observed a blue sport utility vehicle with hazard rear lights on against a traffic sign pole. I approach the vehicle by the driver’s side door. I observed a white female wearing a white and gray dress sitting on the driver’s seat while the vehicle was running.

The female was later identified as Elizabeth Barrett via her FL Driver’s license. I asked Elizabeth if she was okay and that fire rescue was on the way. She said she was fine and that she was heading to her boyfriend’s house in Wellington. I asked Elizabeth if she had any medical conditions she said no. I asked Elizabeth to turn off the vehicle in an attempt to turn off the vehicle she activated her windshield wipers and was trying to turn off the vehicle using the buttons on the steering wheel.

While talking with Elizabeth she has a slurred speech and I could smell a strong odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage imminent from her breath. While illuminating the interior of the vehicle, I observed she had red, bloodshot, and glossy eyes. I asked Elizabeth for her driver’s license. I observed Elizabeth fumble through her wallet while looking for her DL. After obtaining the Driver’s License from Elizabeth I could see an empty bottle of wine on the back seat floor. Fire Rescue arrived at the scene. Elizabeth refuses any medical treatment at this time. At which time I requested a DUI unit on scene.

PBSO says Barrett provided breath samples that registered .198 and .196. The legal limit in Florida is .08. Barrett was released from jail on her own recognizance at 6:03 a.m. Tuesday.
