BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2022 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Boca Raton resident Craig Kaplan is facing a charge of battering a person 65-years-of-age or older after he allegedly attacked his mother. Kaplan was arrested at Planet Smoothie at 1951 North Federal Highway on Sunday afternoon. He remains in the Palm Beach County Jail early Wednesday morning.

BocaNewsNow.com obtained the arrest report which has been edited for clarity. We have redacted the victim’s name and the identities of witnesses. This is how the responding Boca Raton Police Officer documented the incident:

On October 29, 2022 at approximately 1436 hours, I responded to 1951 North Federal Highway (Planet Juice) in reference to a physical domestic disturbance.

According to a manager, he observed Craig Kaplan and his mother (victim 1) enter the store in order to purchase beverages. The manager indicated that Craig entered and exited the store numerous times after placing a smoothie order, while his mother remained seated inside of the store. Due to Craig’s erratic behavior and his mother’s composure appearing to be in distress, the manager inquired if he could be of any assistance to Craig’s mother. The manager indicated that at this time that Craig re-entered the store and engaged his mother in an argument over the vehicle keys.

The manager then observed Craig grab his mother around her upper chest area in a “hugging” manner and tackled her to the ground. At this time, the manager contacted Boca Raton Police Services Department for assistance. I then met with a witness who was present at Planet Juice as a customer.

According to the customer, he witnessed Craig and Craig’s mother inside of the restaurant along with Craig’s behavior of entering and exiting the store several times. The witness indicated that an argument ensued over possession of car keys, which caused Craig to “jump on” his mother, causing her to be “dropped on the floor.” Craig was then observed exiting the business after the altercation.

I then met with Craig’s mother, whose shirt and pants were covered in a purple-colored liquid, later identified as a fruit smoothie. The woman stated that Craig had been acting erratic and had driven aggressively and dangerously to Planet Juice. In order to avoid Craig from driving home, the woman gained access to the vehicle keys, which caused an argument with Craig. When asked if anything physical had transpired, the woman stated, “he pushed me down.” The woman had no visible physical injuries and made no complaints of any injuries.

I finally spoke with Craig, who indicated that he was engaged in an argument with his mother due to her distrust in his driving abilities. Craig stated that he asked his mother to give him the vehicle keys, stating, “I want the keys, give me the keys non, f–k you, f–k, ” in reference to how the argument started and escalated.

Craig additionally stated, “I grabbed her f—–g keys because I didn’t trust her with the keys.” When asked about how his mother ended up falling on the ground, Craig stated “I went with the fall, I knew I couldn’t catch her.”

Kaplan, 56, lives in the 1600 block of NW 4th Avenue. He remains held on $2500 bond according to court records.
