DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2022 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Security officers in Mizner Country Club are being credited with getting an alleged drunk driver off the road in the gated Delray Beach community. Now, Jonette Ober of Daystar Ridge Drive in Boynton Beach is charged with DUI.

According to a police report reviewed by BocaNewsNow.com, Ober entered the community through its gate on Lyons Road and told the security officer at the gatehouse where she was going — her in-law’s house to pick up her daughter. But the officer believed that Ober’s speech was slurred, and couldn’t hear the address. Once she provided the address in a louder voice, she was permitted to enter the community.

The guard, however, continued to believe something was wrong, so he called Mizner Country Club’s “roving” security guard to keep an eye on Ober. The roving guard noted that Ober went to the wrong address. He told her to follow him to the correct address, noting that her speech was apparently slurred. Concerned for her safety, and the safety of others in Mizner, the security guard called the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

“I made contact with Ober who was still in physical control of the vehicle,” wrote a responding PBSO Deputy. “I noted an odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from the interior of the vehicle and Ober’s speech was slurred. When questioned, Ober stated she was here to pick up her daughter at her friend’s house and she just made a simple mistake.”

A Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Deputy who focuses on DUI’s responded to the scene and conducted a DUI investigation. That Deputy wrote that the smell of alcohol emanating from Ober was so strong when he transported her to a blood/breath alcohol testing facility, “I had to lower the window of my vehicle.”

Ober allegedly refused to provide a blood or breath sample, but was still charged with DUI. She was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail and later released on her own recognizance. A court date is pending. BocaNewsNow.com believes this is one of the only occasions in the past several years where a gated community’s private security team took action that led to an arrest.
