BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2022 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — There is a gift card scam underway with Walmart gift cards across Palm Beach County, and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office says it’s important to know how the scam works so you don’t become a victim.
Walmart gift cards are extremely popular during the holiday season. “There is an imposter placing a paper photocopy of a gift card over the legitimate gift card,” says PBSO. “When the fraudulent barcode is scanned and purchased, the funds are placed onto the illegitimate photocopied card, rendering the real gift card valueless. This fraud is undetectable to the human eye.”
PBSO says there is one way to determine whether you’re about to be scammed. “When purchasing a Walmart gift card a patron should run their finger over the barcode,” advised police. “The barcodeshould feel raised and NOT smooth. If the barcode is smooth it could be fraudulent,” said the agency.
If you should fall prey to this crime, report it immediately to PBSO non-emergency number 561-688-3400, or contact your nearest law enforcement agency.
