BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2022 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — It’s New Year’s Eve in South Florida and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is reminding everyone that firing a gun to celebrate 2023 is illegal. Firing a gun tends to be illegal every other day except in a narrow set of circumstances, but it’s definitely illegal to just shoot a gun as a weird way of saying “Happy New Year!”
“Stray bullets can cause injury or be fatal,” says a department spokesperson who adds anyone witnessing gunfire — or hearing gunfire — should call 561-688-3400, 911, or text 911 from your phone in Palm Beach County.
Many gated communities and country clubs in South Palm Beach County are also reminding homeowners and residents that fireworks are prohibited within their community. While fireworks may be legal on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day in Florida, HOA rules prevail when you are in a homeowner or condo association community.
Anyone firing off fireworks can be fined, prohibited from using community amenities, or otherwise disciplined. HOA’s do have the authority to ask law enforcement to issue trespass notices or take other legal enforcement action if fireworks are detonated on a street. Anyone experiencing noise, fireworks, or other safety issues is asked to call your local police department.
