BROWARD COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2023 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport is now open, but hundreds of flights are canceled. It may be days before operations have returned to normal.

Plagued by flooding and debris on the runways, the airport shut Wednesday as an unprecedented amount of rain fell. Nearly 26 inches of rain was recorded near the airport over a 24 hour period. Passengers were stuck at the airport for hours — prohibited from leaving due to the danger on area streets.

As of mid-day Friday, FlightAware.com reports that 249 flights into and out of Fort Lauderdale have been canceled.

Spirit has canceled 86 flights as of midday Friday, JetBlue canceled 67, Southwest canceled 29, United has canceled 14, and American Airlines has canceled 11.

Palm Beach International and Miami International airports are operating under normal conditions.
