PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2023 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — A series of 911 calls claiming active shooters at area schools is keeping police and rescue officials busy Tuesday morning. But the calls are hoaxes. There are no active shooters.

Police and other first responders in Palm Beach County, Broward County, and Miami-Dade County have all received calls about alleged situations involving “active shooters” or other calamities Tuesday morning. Police, SWAT, and emergency medical personnel all respond — only to find that fortunately, the calls are all fake.

SWATTERs, or people who call SWAT for crimes that aren’t actually occurring, are increasingly using Artificial Intelligence to mimic voices for 911 operators who have no reason to believe the calls aren’t real. It is unclear if that’s what’s happening across South Florida today.

The calls have involved colleges and universities in the tri-county area, but as of mid-day Tuesday, no public or private school in Palm Beach County has been the subject of the fake 911 calls.
