BROWARD COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2023 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — If you are traveling out of Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport this Memorial Day weekend, know this: you’re not going to be alone. The airport is preparing for a massive travel weekend, and is offering tips — and warnings — for a smooth journey.

Nearly 700,000 travelers are expected to travel through FLL on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

Airport (Roadway) Traffic: Terminal roadways are expected to be busier with increased vehicular activity during this holiday period. When picking up family or friends at FLL after 9AM (and especially after 6PM), if traffic is congested on the approach to the airport’s entrance roadways, consider using the Departures (upper) level roadway instead of the Arrivals (lower) level.

Arrive Early: While it’s generally recommended to arrive at least two hours before your departure time for domestic flights and three hours if flying internationally, during peak travel periods such as the Christmas/New Year’s Day holiday season, it’s best to follow any updated guidance from your airline as they may require additional time for check-in and bag processing. Security processing lines may also be longer due to increased holiday passenger traffic.

Onsite Parking: With holiday parking demand typically high, arrive early to secure a spot in the onsite garages to ensure you check-in for your flight on time. Consider other options for getting to the airport such as arranging for a drop-off/pick-up, taxi, or ride-share service. Watch for parking status updates on our social media pages (Twitter and Facebook). Note: We do expect the onsite FLL garages to fill up quickly, so our offsite Overflow Parking Lot may be activated if demand trends hold as projected

Valet Parking: Valet parking will be available, however spots at FLL will likely go fast this holiday period and potentially sell-out, so arrive early to secure a space or consider ride-share, taxi, off-airport parking options or arrange to be dropped off/picked up by a family member or friend.

Travel & Weapons: They don’t mix well. However, if you have to travel with a licensed firearm, follow the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) protocols to pack and transport your weapon safely in a secure, hard-sided locked container as checked luggage. If caught with a gun at a TSA passenger screening checkpoint, this will disrupt your travel plans, and you could face a hefty penalty as well as an arrest.
