UPDATE: 1:51 p.m. — The Miami Herald is now reporting that Ramirez was forced to leave a Tampa-area hotel after engaging in a domestic dispute. He was staying at the hotel with his wife. He apparently shot himself on the side of I-75 south of Tampa.

UPDATE: As of 8:30 a.m., Miami-Dade Police officials report that Ramirez is in “critical but stable” condition.

It was not immediately clear what happened or the extent of the injuries sustained by Freddie Ramirez. The Miami Herald reports that Ramirez shot himself following a traffic stop in the Tampa area. This has not been confirmed by BocaNewsnow.com.

The Miami-Dade police department issued this statement to BocaNewsNow.com shortly after midnight.

“We have been advised by local law enforcement agencies that our Director, Alfredo “Freddy” Ramirez, has suffered a critical injury in the Tampa area.  We understand he is currently undergoing surgery.  We ask you to please keep him in your prayers.  Details surrounding the incident are being investigated jointly by the Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.  We will provide information as it becomes available.”

From Ramirez’s official biography: “Alfredo “Freddy” Ramirez III serves in a dual role under Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava’s administration as Director of the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) and Chief of Safety and Emergency Response; responsible for the oversight of both MDPD and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department.
