BROWARD COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2023 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony does not want you to buy him a gift card. It’s not that he doesn’t like gift cards. And most people do like Apple products. But he is not telling anyone to buy him an Apple gift card or go to jail. Scammers, however, are doing just that — and using his his name when they call you to demand a gift card.
According to BSO: “The Broward Sheriff’s Office is investigating a text messaging scam where someone is claiming to be Sheriff Gregory Tony. The scammer is asking victims to purchase Apple gift cards on his behalf. This is a scam. Should you receive one of these texts, please do not respond to it.
BSO’s Threat Management Unit (TMU) is investigating this issue. If you have received one of these suspicious texts or have been victimized, please contact BSO TMU Detective Eric_Versteeg@sheriff.org. You can also report the information by calling BSO’s non-emergency number, 954-764-HELP (4357).
Please be aware that BSO will never text or call you to ask for gift cards, money, personal information or for any form of payment. If you receive this type of text or call, do not respond to it. Instead, immediately report it to law enforcement.”
