In just the past seven days, multiple car thefts and theft from car reports have been made to PBSO. Vehicle owners often invite thieves by leaving key fobs in cars, thinking gated communities are safe. They are not. (CrimeMapping).

BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2023 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — It is difficult to believe that this is still happening, but homeowners in gated communities in South Palm Beach County continue to leave their key fobs in their vehicles — then are shocked when their vehicles are stolen or burglarized. While not exclusively a New York transplant problem, the victims of these idiot crimes tend to be Transplants from New York and the northeast who move to gated communities — believe they are completely safe in the “free state of Florida” — only to find out that palm trees are merely trees and gates are merely gates. Neither are truly crime prevention.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, as it sadly has to do multiple times a year, is again reminding South Palm Beach County residents that leaving a key fob in a car — even in a gated community — is a horrible idea. From PBSO in a statement to BOCANEWSNOW.com:

“The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office has been experiencing an increase in vehicle burglaries, stolen vehicles and stolen KEY FOB’s occurring in the south part of Palm Beach Country. Many of the burglaries and stolen vehicles have occurred due to owners forgetting to lock their vehicles and leaving the key fob in their cars. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office would like to REMIND the public: · Do not leave valuables in plain view such as: GPS devices, laptops, PDA’s, cell phones and purses. Do not leave windows open. Do not leave doors unlocked. Do not leave the keys or key fob’s inside the vehicle. Do not leave personal information in plain view. Do not move valuable items to the trunk while in public view.”

Last month, a Seven Bridges Delray Beach resident inexplicably left $20K in jewelry in a car with an open trunk. The jewelry was snatched in broad daylight. The map, above, shows where cars have been stolen or had items stolen from inside over the past seven days leading up to August 11th, 2023.
