Reported time:  10:37 AM

Location: Southbound State Road 91 (Florida’s Turnpike) approximately 300’ south of State Road 808 (Glades Road) overpass; within unincorporated, Palm Beach County, Florida

All southbound travel lanes are currently open.

Vehicle 1 (V-1) – 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Pick-up Truck (Silver)

Vehicle 2 (V-2) –  2016 Ford Transit Van (White)

Vehicle 3 (V-3) – 2018 Isuzu NPR Truck (White)

Vehicle 4 (V-4) – 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE350 SUV (Blue)

Vehicle 5 (V-5) – 2008 Mercury Mountaineer SUV (Silver)

Persons involved:

Driver of Vehicle 1 (D-1) – Male, 38 YOA; Pompano Beach, Broward County, Florida (Incapacitating Injuries)

Pedestrian 1 (P-1) – Male, 40; Lake Worth, Palm Beach County, Florida (Fatal injuries) NOK Has Not Officially Been Notified at this Time.

Driver of Vehicle 3 (D-2) – Male, 26 YOA; Deerfield Beach, Broward County, Florida (Incapacitating Injuries)

Driver of Vehicle 4 (D-3) – Male, 69 YOA; Boynton Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida (Non-Incapacitating Injures)

Driver of Vehicle 5 (D-4)- Male, 68 YOA; Boynton Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida (Incapacitating Injuries)

Vehicle 02 (V-2) was stopped upon the southbound center lane of southbound State Road 91 south of State Road 808. Vehicle 01 (V-1), Vehicle 02 (V-3) and Vehicle 04 (V-4) were traveling southbound upon the center lane of southbound State Road 91 approaching the location of V-2. V-1 was in front of V-3 and V-3 was in front of V-4. Vehicle 05 (V-5) was traveling southbound upon the inside lane of southbound State Road 91 to the rear of V-4. The original driver of V-2 (P-1) was standing at the rear left of V-2.

V-1 failed to take any driving action to avoid a collision with V-2. The front of V-1 collided with the rear of V-2, and P-1. Post collision with V-1, V-2 was propelled in a southwesterly direction. Post collision with V-1, P-1 was thrown in a southeast direction. P-1 collided against the concrete median wall. P-1 came to rest upon the inside paved shoulder of southbound State Road 91. Post collision with V-2, V-1 traveled in a southeasterly direction towards the median barrier wall. The front of V-1 collided with the concrete median wall. V-1 continued to travel south as its front portion remained in contact with the concrete barrier wall. V-1 came to rest facing east upon the inside paved shoulder. V-3 observed V-2 traveling in a southwesterly direction. V-3 was maneuvered southeast to avoid V-2. The front left of V-3 then collided with the rear right of V-1. As V-3 continued to travel east, the entire left side of V-3 collided with the right side of V-1. V-3 came to rest facing east, with its left side intermingled with V-1’s right side, upon the inside paved shoulder of southbound State Road 91.  Upon approach to V-1, V-4 attempted to stop. V-4 could not be stopped in time, and the front of V-4 collided with the left side of V-1. V-4 came to rest facing south upon the inside paved shoulder of southbound State Road 91. The driver of V-5 observed the incident occurring and maneuvered V-5 in a southwest direction towards the outside paved shoulder. The front left of V-5 collided with the front right of V-2. V-2 overturned onto its right side as it rotated counterclockwise. V-2 came to rest facing west upon the outside paved shoulder of State Road 91. V-5 continued to travel in a southerly direction, out of control, after the collision with V-2. V-5 traveled across all southbound lanes and entered onto the inside paved shoulder, where its front left collided with the concrete barrier wall. V-5 then overturned onto its right side. V-5 came to rest facing south while occupying the inside southbound lane of State Road 91.

P-1 succumbed to injuries sustained as a result of the traffic crash and was pronounced deceased at the traffic crash scene via Palm Beach County Fire Rescue personnel.  This is still an ongoing investigation.

UPDATE: 3:30 p.m. — The Turnpike has reopened. We are awaiting a full rundown of events from Florida Highway Patrol, although it may be several hours before investigators are prepared to release details.

UPDATE: 1:21 p.m. — The Turnpike remains completely closed southbound near Glades Road. Drivers stuck in the mess are reporting that several people have left their cars and are walking around. There is no estimate from FHP as to when the road may be reopened.

UPDATE: 12:12 p.m. — We have learned there are two scenes within a few hundred yards of each other. One involves a box truck, another involves an overturned vehicle. At least four people have been rushed to Delray Medical Center.

The Florida Department of Transportation issued an alert about the incident. There was no immediate word concerning the nature of the crash, how many vehicles are involved, how many people are involved, or the extent of any injury.

Traffic cameras show a backup that passes Glades Road as of 11:58. Expect traffic to continue to build. Avoid Florida’s Turnpike starting at Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach. You best bet: exit, travel to U.S. 441, and rejoin the Turnpike in the area of the Sawgrass Expressway.
